Moving out is when cleaning matters most and when you have the least time for it. The final walkthrough is what decides whether your deposit comes back in full, and landlords look in very specific places. Here's the checklist we work through on every move-out job across Bergen and Passaic Counties.
Start with the kitchen, because it's where deposits are won and lost. Inside the oven, inside and behind the fridge, the microwave, every cabinet and drawer interior, the range hood and filter, and the sink and faucet. An empty cabinet with crumbs in it reads as 'not cleaned' to an inspecting landlord, no matter how good the counters look.
Bathrooms come next. Toilets, tubs, showers, grout, glass doors, mirrors, exhaust fans, and under-sink cabinets. Hard-water buildup and grout discoloration are the two things that get flagged most, and both take real scrubbing rather than a wipe-down.
Then the parts of a home you never think about while you live there: baseboards, door frames, light switch plates, outlet covers, closet shelves and rods, window sills and tracks, and vents. In an empty unit there's no furniture hiding any of it, so every one of these gets noticed.
Finish with floors. Vacuum carpets thoroughly — including closets and stairs — and treat any traffic stains. Hard floors get swept and mopped last, once everything above them is done, so you're not cleaning the same floor twice.
One practical tip: clean after the movers leave, not before. Cleaning a furnished apartment and then dragging furniture across it undoes most of the work.
